Sarvar Sabri is an internationally distinguished and celebrated tabla player whose fervour and versatility for the rich diversity of the world's musical traditions, has spurred him to constantly experiment with other world-class composers and musicians, and to extend the boundaries and borders of his own classical form. Sarvar Sabri performs regularly with some of India's great masters of music, including his father: the legendary sarangi (Indian bowed instrument) maestro Ustad Sabri Khan. Sabri also performs with contemporary jazz bands and orchestras including BCMG (Birmingham Contemporary Music group) CBSO (City of Birmingham Symphoney Orchestra), Sinfonia Viva, Trishula (Martin Speak Trio) and his own company Sabri Ensemble. He has also composed and performed extensively for theatre, dance, radio and TV both in India and internationally. 'Master Drummer of India' is a fifty and a half minute performance-based album that is composed of four tracks: 'Taal Bundu Khani' (an unfamiliar time cycle of 8 and a half beats), 'Taal Farodust' (14 beats) 'Teentaal' (16 beats) and 'Dadra' (6 beats). These solo arrangements really do 'show-off' the exceptional talent of this musical maestro. Sabri makes use of what appears to be regular and customary taals (melodic beats), and then modifies them into intricate and elaborate masterpieces. His skill and expertise arouse the listener to experience a similar voyage in which one is transported from the hustle and bustle of everyday life into a world that centres on the expression of the inner-self: the soul. This album is a must for all those lovers and non-lovers of the sounds of the tabla. Shezad
